Artist Statement: In this series of charcoal drawings, Tang takes reference from various places she has been to in Hong Kong, Manila and Singapore. These could be a view of the escalators in the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station, or spaces in a shopping mall. She believes that even though these drawn spaces are transitory spaces that people may not usually linger in, or have actual memories of, viewers may find them familiar and be reminded of certain places they have been to, and/or people they have met there. She proposes that viewers take a longer look at these drawn spaces, and perhaps, contemplate on their relationships with the environment and with the people around them. As in all her charcoal drawings, Tang employs the technique of chiaroscuro―an intense contrast of light and dark to create the atmosphere in her compositions.
